ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons I say this is because he spoke French with a Piedmontese accent. No Jews were allowed in Portugal at that time as far as I can tell and if he was indeed from Alsace, he would have spoken Alsatian. If he was a Medici he would have spoken Italian with a Tuscan accent. The fact that he had a Piedmontese accent suggests he grew up in Piedmont which was governed by the Savoys. His skills suggest he had a humanistic education which means he was either of nobility or patronized by nobility. Then there's Montferrat which is used as one of his aliases. Montferrat was for a while controlled by the Gonzaga before it was handed to the Savoys. Thus he must have been a Savoy.
